Sanjusan Gendo 三十三間堂

Sanjusan Gendo is a long wooden building (LEFT) that houses 1001 statues of kannon (buddhist guys). Each statue is gold plated and has tons of arms (something about 52 arms saves a planet...) but you aren't allowed to take pictures inside (which makes sense). 33 (san ju san) is in its name because it is the number of pillars in the building between the buddha statues (I think).

LEFT: the washing station outside, with little statues of Jizo.

No place in Kyoto is complete without a garden...
The orange color represents the sun (which is why there is so much orange in the shrines).
